Sara Davis Buechner making her SJCO debut in this intriguing early 20th
century work by Czech composer/conductor Kapralova.

Commemorative works, including renowned theatre composer Delinger’s
world premiere, provoke thoughtful intropection. The Sinfonia, a string
orchestra setting of the 8th string quartet, stands as an appropriate
tribute to the Shostakovich centennial. Expert clarinetist Gareth Davis, a
specialist in contemporary English works, brings to SJCO
a definitive rendering of Finzi’s charming concerto.

This
year’s collaboration with THE CHORAL PROJECT, under the direction of Daniel Hughes,
features the world premiere of a major new work: The Songbird and the
Eagle, based on a traditional Buddhist Jakata Tale. With music by Kim D.
Sherman and text by Rick Davis, explores the
theme of the possibility of peace in the world being attained through the small
actions of each individual.
The Songbird and the Eagle
has been commissioned by The San José Chamber Orchestra in conjunction
with the aubrey’s END foundation.
The program also features Christmas Day by Gustav Holst and Dona
nobis pacem by Vaughan Williams with soprano Sandra Rubalcava and
baritone Joseph Wright.

the German music scene, returns for a rare Bay Area appearance in Vivaldi’s

Judith Shatin’s fascinating Stringing
the Bow sets the tone for an
evening of spring strings. Canadian Martin Foster has created a rich new
arrangement of the string quartet in a minor by Brahms and we proudly unveil
Craig Bohmler’s new Concerto for Harp, commissioned by and performed here by
harpist par excellence Dan Levitan.
